The iPhone 17 Pro Max launched in September 2025 at $1,199 — the same starting price as the 16 Pro Max. If you own a 16 Pro Max and are deciding whether to upgrade, this is the most important article you will read before spending over a thousand dollars. We ran both phones side by side for eight weeks across every scenario that matters.

iPhone 17 Pro Max — titanium frame, thinner bezels, and the upgraded 48 MP camera system.

Design and Display

Both phones use the same titanium frame introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro series, but the 17 Pro Max has noticeably thinner bezels — down to 1.15mm from 1.55mm. In practice, this means slightly more screen in the same footprint. The 17 Pro Max display measures 6.9 inches at 2868x1320 resolution — identical dimensions to the 16 Pro Max.

Where the display genuinely changes is peak brightness: the 17 Pro Max hits 3,000 nits peak outdoor brightness versus 2,000 nits on the 16 Pro Max. Under direct sunlight in summer, the 17 Pro Max is meaningfully easier to read. Both displays are ProMotion LTPO OLED with adaptive refresh from 1Hz to 120Hz — neither advantage here is dramatic in everyday use.

Chip Performance — A19 Pro vs A18 Pro

The A19 Pro is built on TSMC's second-generation 3nm process (N3P), delivering roughly 20% faster CPU performance and 30% faster GPU performance than the A18 Pro. In daily use — opening apps, browsing, messaging — neither phone feels slow. The difference surfaces in sustained workloads: 4K ProRes video processing, large Photoshop exports, and on-device AI tasks.

Apple Intelligence on the 17 Pro Max is noticeably faster at generating writing suggestions, summarising long documents, and running the on-device image generation tools. If you use Apple Intelligence heavily for work, the A19 Pro's upgraded Neural Engine (processing 40% more operations per second) makes a real difference. For standard use, the gap is smaller than the spec sheet suggests.

Camera — The Biggest Upgrade

This is where the 17 Pro Max makes its clearest case. The ultrawide camera jumps from 12 MP to 48 MP — a massive resolution increase that transforms macro photography and wide-angle shots. Photos taken on the 17 Pro Max ultrawide at maximum resolution resolve detail that is simply not captured on the 16 Pro Max's 12 MP ultrawide.

The telephoto system is identical on paper — 48 MP 5x periscope on both. However, Apple's computational photography improvements mean the 17 Pro Max processes telephoto images with more detail in shadows and better colour accuracy in mixed lighting. In a direct A/B test of the same scene, a trained eye can tell them apart, but casual photographers will not notice a meaningful difference.

Video: both phones shoot ProRes 4K at 120fps. The 17 Pro Max adds Log encoding directly to the internal storage (no external SSD required), which is significant for filmmakers. The 16 Pro Max required an external SSD for Log recording at 4K 60fps and above.

Battery Life

The 16 Pro Max has a slightly larger battery that Apple rates at 33 hours of video playback. The 17 Pro Max is rated at 30 hours — a reduction Apple attributes to the brighter display drawing more power. In real-world mixed use (6-7 hours of screen-on time per day), both phones comfortably last a full day and often into the next morning.

The 17 Pro Max charges faster via MagSafe 3 (25W versus 15W on the 16 Pro Max), reaching 50% in approximately 30 minutes. Both support 15W wireless charging for third-party Qi2 chargers and 7.5W for standard Qi pads.

Price and Value

The iPhone 17 Pro Max starts at $1,199 for 256 GB. The iPhone 16 Pro Max, now in Apple's previous-generation lineup, starts at $999 for 256 GB. That $200 gap is the central question of this comparison.

Buy the 17 Pro Max if...You shoot a lot of video or photography, use Apple Intelligence daily, plan to keep this phone 3+ years, or want the highest display brightness available.
Keep the 16 Pro Max if...You are happy with your current phone, do not need the 48 MP ultrawide upgrade, and would rather save $200 for accessories or storage upgrades.
Consider iPhone 16 Pro Max new if...You are upgrading from iPhone 14 or older — at $999 it is a dramatic improvement and the $200 saving buys AirPods or extra storage.

Final Verdict

If you own an iPhone 16 Pro Max, the upgrade to 17 Pro Max is worthwhile primarily if you care about the 48 MP ultrawide camera, faster Apple Intelligence, or Log video recording without an external drive. The display brightness improvement is real but not essential.

If you are coming from iPhone 14 Pro or older, either phone is a massive upgrade. In that case, the 16 Pro Max at $999 is the smarter buy unless camera performance is your top priority.
