The MacBook Air M4 is the most important laptop released in 2026 — not because it is the fastest, but because it is the best balance of performance, battery life, portability, and value that any manufacturer has achieved in a thin-and-light laptop. After four months of daily use as our primary machine, this is the laptop we recommend to almost everyone.

Photographers, developers, writers, students, and executives all use this machine in our team. Not one of them has wanted to go back to their previous laptop.

M4 Chip Performance

The Apple M4 chip is built on a second-generation 3nm process from TSMC, delivering roughly 25% more CPU performance than the M3 and a 40% improvement in Neural Engine throughput. In practical terms: Final Cut Pro exports are faster than any Windows laptop under $2,000. Xcode builds complete before a competing Core Ultra machine has warmed up. Python data science workloads that used to require a dedicated GPU finish comfortably on the integrated 10-core GPU.

We ran Cinebench 2024, Geekbench 6, and DaVinci Resolve 4K export tests. In all three, the MacBook Air M4 matched or outperformed Windows machines costing $400-$600 more. The M4 is genuinely that efficient.

Battery Life — A Class Apart

Apple claims 18 hours of battery life. We achieved 17 hours 20 minutes in a mixed workload: browser, code editor, Slack, Zoom calls, and occasional Spotify streaming with the display at 60% brightness. This is almost double what the Dell XPS 15 manages under similar conditions.

The practical impact is profound. For the first time, we regularly left the charger at home for a full work day without range anxiety. The MacBook Air M4 changed our workflow more than the performance did.

Display

The 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display at 2560x1664 resolution runs at 500 nits brightness — genuinely comfortable in direct sunlight. Colour accuracy covers 100% of sRGB and P3 wide colour, making it suitable for colour-critical work. The display is not ProMotion (no 120Hz), which is the main visual difference between the Air and the MacBook Pro line.

For video and photo editors working in colour-graded content, the P3 coverage is the key spec. For general use, the display looks excellent.

Design and Build

The fanless design is the MacBook Air's defining physical characteristic. There is no cooling fan — the M4 chip dissipates heat through the aluminium chassis passively. The result is a laptop that is completely silent in every situation. Under sustained load, the bottom of the chassis becomes warm but never hot.

At 2.7 lbs (1.24 kg) it is lighter than almost every 13-inch Windows laptop. The MagSafe charging port returns alongside two Thunderbolt 4 ports and a headphone jack. The keyboard remains best-in-class.

What We Did Not Like

The base model comes with 256 GB of storage, which fills up faster than you expect in 2026 with large video files and app sizes. We recommend configuring at least 512 GB at purchase — storage is soldered and cannot be upgraded later. Similarly, the base 16 GB of unified memory handles everything comfortably today, but 24 GB is worth considering if you plan to keep this machine for 4+ years.

There is no dedicated GPU. Video games and 3D rendering workloads that require Nvidia hardware are out of scope for the Air. For those tasks, look at the Dell XPS 15 or a MacBook Pro.
